For the course Design 4 we were fully free to design a machine. As at the time I was researching unique ways to recycle, I decided to develop a machine that would turn PET drink bottles into usable 3D printing filament.
The machine consisted of 3 main parts:
- Cutting block where the bottles would be sliced into strips
- Pultrusion block where the PET strips would be pulled through a nozzle in order to form the filament
- Melting block to melt multiple bottles together to a consistent strand of filament
